John 21 — The Miraculous Catch, Peter's Restoration, and Feed My Sheep
I have a fishing net in the garage that I bought at a sporting goods store years ago for a trip to Strawberry Reservoir. The mesh is too loose for anything smaller than a dinner plate. But I keep it because the correct tool matters less than knowing where to put it.
John 21 is about knowing where to put the net, and the disciples had fished all night and caught nothing. They were professionals who knew the lake and the season and the habits of the fish. None of it mattered. Then a man on the shore told them to cast on the other side, and the net came up full.
That is the whole chapter in miniature. Human effort followed by failure, then a quiet instruction that brought abundance.
Meaning of Jesus Asking Peter Three Times Do You Love Me
The chapter opens with Peter announcing that he is going fishing. Six other disciples go with him. They fish through the night and catch nothing. At dawn, Jesus stands on the shore, but they do not recognize Him. He asks if they have any food. They say no. He tells them to cast the net on the opposite side of the boat, and they catch so many fish that they cannot haul the net in.
John recognizes Jesus first. He tells Peter, and Peter jumps into the water and swims to shore. The others follow in the boat, dragging the net full of fish. When they land, they see a fire of coals with fish already cooking and bread beside it.
Jesus tells them to bring some of the fish they just caught. Peter goes to the net and drags it ashore. It has 153 large fish in it, and the net is not torn.
I have thought about that detail for years, and the net held. A net that had been worked all night, dragged empty through the water for hours, and then suddenly filled with 153 fish. The net did not break. There is something in that about the strength of ordinary things when they are used the correct way.
Why Did the Disciples Catch 153 Fish in John 21
After breakfast, Jesus turned to Peter and asked him, Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me more than these? Peter said yes, and Jesus told him to feed His lambs, which was a charge to care for the believers.
He asked again, Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter said yes again, and Jesus told him to feed His sheep, repeating the same charge.
He asked a third time, Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter was grieved that Jesus asked a third time and he responded with everything he had in him. He said, Lord, you know all things and you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my sheep.
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
— John 21:15
Three questions, three denials, three charges. The symmetry is not accidental, and Jesus was not asking for information. He was giving Peter a way back.
I have thought about that conversation in the context of my own failures. There are mistakes I have made that I would undo if I could. The kind that sit in your chest and do not go away. What I notice about this exchange is that Jesus did not make Peter recount the denials. He did not lecture him but gave him a question and a job. The question was about love and the job was about service.
That is how restoration works in the gospel. It is a process of being given something to do.
What Does Feed My Sheep Mean in the Scriptures
After the third exchange, Jesus told Peter something else about how his life would end. He told Peter that when he was young, he dressed himself and went where he wanted. But when he was old, someone else would dress him and lead him where he did not want to go.
John adds that Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then He said, Follow me.
Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. He asked, Lord, what about this man? Jesus answered with a question of His own that redirected Peter, saying if I will that he stay until I come, what is that to you? He told Peter to follow him, and the instruction was for Peter alone, not for anyone else.
I have read that exchange dozens of times, and it lands differently every time. Peter had just been told he would be martyred. He had just been restored to his calling. And the first thing he did was look at someone else and ask about their path.
Jesus did not answer the question but redirected Peter to his own path. What is that to you, He asked, then He told Peter to follow him. The instruction was for Peter alone.
I wrote about the danger of comparison in an earlier article on John 18, and the same principle shows up here. The question about another person's fate is a distraction. The only instruction that matters is the one directed at you.
How Does Jesus Restore Peter After His Denial
The chapter ends with a note that the disciple who testified of these things is the one who wrote them down, and that his testimony is true. There are also many other things Jesus did that are not written in this book.
That final line has always struck me as honest. The gospel of John is selective and does not claim to be complete. It claims to be true.
The net in my garage is still hanging on the wall. I have not used it in years. But I look at it sometimes and remember that the fish were there the whole time. The disciples just needed to cast on the other side.
Peter needed the same thing. He had the love and the calling. He just needed to cast in a different direction. Jesus gave him the direction and the job. The rest was up to him.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Jesus ask Peter do you love me three times
The three questions mirror Peter's three denials of Jesus during the trial. Each denial was a step away and each question was a step back. Jesus gave Peter a structured way to reclaim his commitment and his calling.
What is the significance of the 153 fish in John 21
The specific number is recorded in the text, which suggests it mattered. Some see it as symbolic of the nations or the known fish species of the time. The primary point is the abundance that came from following Jesus's instruction after a night of empty work.
What does Jesus mean by feed my sheep
This is a charge to nurture and protect the members of the Church. It defines leadership as service. Peter was not given a title or a position. He was given a responsibility to care for people.
Why did Jesus tell Peter what is that to you
Peter asked about the fate of the disciple John. Jesus redirected him to his own path because comparison is a distraction. Each person's discipleship is their own responsibility.
What is the meaning of the miraculous catch of fish in John 21
The catch shows that human effort alone is not enough. The disciples were skilled fishermen who worked all night and caught nothing. They succeeded only when they followed Jesus's instruction. The abundance was not from their skill but from their obedience.
The net in the garage is still there. I walked past it this morning and thought about Peter dragging 153 fish to shore. He did not count them while they were in the water. He counted them after they were on the beach. The abundance was real, and the net held.
