Three Men, Three Messages: Individual Counsel for David, Peter, and John Whitmer in D&C 30

By David Whitaker

Every tool in my shop has a different purpose because the chisel does what the plane cannot and the saw cuts where the chisel would fail. They are all tools but each one needs different instructions since each one does different work.

D&C 30 contains three separate revelations to three different men and each message is specific to the person. David Whitmer gets counsel about fearing man while Peter Whitmer is told to support his brother and John Whitmer is commanded to preach like a trumpet. The Lord does not give them the same message because they are not the same people.

Counsel to David Whitmer

David has been fearing men and relying on his own strength. The Lord tells him that he has not given heed to the Spirit and to those who have been set in authority over him and his mind has been on the things of the earth more than the things of God.

The remedy is not more activity but reflection. The Lord tells David to inquire for himself and ponder upon the things he has received because the way back from distraction is through quiet thought and a return to what he already knows.

Behold, I say unto you, David, that you have feared man and have not relied on me for strength as you ought.

D&C 30:1

I think about this counsel more than I like to admit knowing what it is to be distracted by earthly things and to fear what people think. David was not rebuked harshly because he was invited to ponder and sometimes the way forward is slower rather than faster.

Counsel to Peter Whitmer Jr.

Peter is told to go with his brother Oliver and give heed to his words and advice while sustaining his brother in the ministry and supporting the work. The revelation reinforces that Joseph Smith is the only one appointed to receive commandments for the Church. Peter is called to preach but he operates under the same authority structure that governs everyone.

I think about the humility this requires. Peter had his own calling and his own gifts but he was told to follow Oliver guidance. The work is not about individual independence but about coordinated effort under the right direction.

This connects to an earlier reflection about the master plan and the single channel in D&C 28. That section established that Joseph Smith holds the keys for the whole Church while D&C 30 shows how the Whitmers were to operate within that structure.

Counsel to John Whitmer

John is told to commence proclaiming the gospel as with the voice of a trump making the image clear and bold and unavoidable. He is to declare rather than whisper or hint. The Lord tells him to open his mouth and not fear what man can do and the same fear that troubled David is addressed again with the same solution.

Johns field is specific as he is to labor around Philip Burroughs and on the borders of Zion showing that the global call is executed through local work.

Individualized Revelation in the Church

The chapter teaches that revelation is not a generic product because the Lord knows each person separately and gives counsel that fits their specific needs. David needed to ponder while Peter needed to follow and John needed to speak boldly. None of them received the same instructions but all of them were part of the same work.

Closing

The chisel and the plane and the saw are all different tools but they are all necessary for the same project. D&C 30 shows that the Lord uses different people for different purposes and gives each one the specific counsel they need. David needed to reflect while Peter needed to follow and John needed to speak but the hand that guides them is the same.
